Here’s How I Turned The Orange Beetle… Beet RED

Filed under: Copywriting — Shaune on Wednesday, October 11, 2006

Hello all,

With 9 days notice Alan Forrest Smith AKA, The Orange Beetle Man, asked me to speak at his Masterclass in the UK. Of course I said “no problem.” I saw it as my chance to really “show my stuff.”

The problem…

How would I pull it off?

I have a new copywriting coaching program starting soon. I have ongoing consulting and clients I’m working with. I had just agreed to work with Brian Keith Voiles on a Joint Venture and a few info. products “under construction.”

Two days later (for 7 day advanced notice) I start booking my flight. After 40 minutes with a booking agent who wasn’t fluent English — frustrating — I find a one-way flight with one ticket left on it. She decides to tell me “the details” and after 12 minutes of feeling increasingly frustrated that I would lose the one seat left, I say – Ma’am could you please book that seat?

She did — Phew — It was still there.

Next I try to book a room at the event the hotel is at — “The MacDonald Castle” — A spectacular spot and it’s totally booked.

My passport just expired so I needed to make 3 separate trips in town to get a new one… in a matter of days.

What would I talk about?

It’s Alan’s event and he’s a copywriter.

On and on the story goes…

Long story short I repositioned The Secret Six and The Power of Intimate Interviews to the Internet Marketing market as a way to create content — create product — open the door with influential people — generate traffic — etc. etc.

Yes it was a brain melt to get through. I was up until 5:45 AM putting the presentation together on Friday night and the alarm went off at 7:30… AM.

Yes with less than two hours sleep I presented to 100 savvy Internet Marketers after they had heard from people like Alan Forrest Smith, Kirt Christensen and Jerry Hart.

Pretty unnerving but…

We rocked the place.

I was on. Speaking really is my thing. It was soooo fun for me.

Oh yeah…

I had hard product created — Secret Six manual and 10 CDs.

That too was intense — the place in the UK that said it would be easy to get done was wrong — I ended up having to get the CDs made in Halifax and Fedexed “across the pond.”

David — Thank God for David – He got the box to Fedex at 5:28 and they closed at 5:30.

Then we had to pray that the box didn’t get held in customs — it didn’t and we got it just in time.

I could go on and on about why this should not have happened.

All I can say is if you want something bad enough, including your copy career…

Just do it!

The day before I spoke Alan had said that it was a great crowd just not a buying crowd.

So I was making plans to ship the materials back and market them in some other way.

Well…

We sold out and now have a “rep.” You should see what they are saying about me including Alan himself.

After I speak, Alan pulls me aside – seemed to me to be hurried — red-faced and all. I thought he was cranky because I went overtime and another speaker was waiting to go on.

What he said to me was that my positioning was brilliant and that it had been a Veeeeery long time since he had seen a presentation like that. He said it was a bit risky to bring me over but that I really, beyond any expectation he might have had… over-delivered.

He has a big project in the works and has suggested, “we do business together.”

The great news is that it was all on video.

Speaking truly is where I “get in the zone.”

I can not wait to do it again.

Oh yeah…

The guy who did the video — Alan brings him in from Arkansas — He videos for other Internet Marketing seminars.

Although he rarely does so, he asked it would be okay if he sent my video off to other Seminar hosts. “They’ll be excited to see what you’ve done,” he said. : )

It seems I just might be “on the circuit.”

I’ll give a further update real soon.

From a very excited Shaune

Hey Shaune! Great job…sounds like yet another example of Ready, Fire, Aim! Or I could go Nike on you (and just re-read your post and you already did!).

So it must have been quite a rush being in front of the crowd. First of all, about how many people were there? The dynamic of public speaking is so interesting. I’d love to know at what moment you knew you “had them.” Was there a particular story you told near the beginning that grabbed them or a particular tidbit or “secret” that you could give away here? In other words, at what point did you feel them begin to telegraph “this guy knows something I want to know and right now I’d rather be in this room than anywhere else!”.

Congratulations and hope you’re catching up on the shut-eye!

Hey my friend. Congratulations. I read your story via email earlier. Very inspiring. I’ve heard you “live” via teleseminar, which is phenomenal. I’d love to see you present in person. :-)

Hi Shaune,

I saw you, you were great. By the way I tried to buy the info later, Alan said it would be no problem. Any ideas.

Again just to say you were great, one of the highlights. Can’t say enough about how well you did.

Hey Shaune,

Two hours of sleep is one thing.

Two hours of sleep in a time zone five hours ahead is another.

PLUS you had the other challenge of your strange foriegn accent…

Reminds me of Dan Kennedy’s early talks, where he’d be scheduled as the last person after a multi-day seminar. People were already getting up to leave before he opened his mouth.

Sometimes challenging situations make us do the 110%, while the others settle with 90%.

Congrats,

John

There was one point where I was so sure it just wasn’t going to happen - the cds were not ready, and I had to be at the downtown Fedex location by 5pm. I was totally bummed out about it.

It was ten minutes to 5 and Shaune called. He had found out that the location on the other side of the city was open until 5:30.

“Thank God for David”

More like thank God for the filthy street guide in the cab. The cabbie didn’t know where the Fedex place was, let alone what street it was on. He had a street guide though.

The guide was disgusting - all covered with grime, footprints, possibly even vomit. It was gross. I had to take this thing, find the street, and give the cabbie directions… he forced his way across the bridge in rush hour traffic, and made it though the maze of streets to the Fedex location - just barely.

But he did get me there in time to get the box out, so he earned his tip.

I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes…

I was there. I volunteered to go “across the pond” to the IM seminar with Shaune as it would be a great learning experience. (well, also I’d get to go to ENGLAND!)

It was amazing. Beautiful countryside…musical accents…and a room full of eager and savvy Internet marketers. Still, a lot of work needed to get done before Shaune’s presentation. There was no time for sightseeing.

Into the wee hours of the morning before his presentation, we worked on the outline. He was organizing, and I was transcribing it onto a flip chart. At about 5:30 a.m., my eyes were no longer focusing, and my usual good nature was receding. Shaune strolls over to where I was still working and calmly states…”That last line is crooked.”

If I hadn’t been so exhausted, I probably would have taken him off at the knees right then and there.

As it was, we got the presentation done in the nick of time. I’d never seen Shaune speak in front of a crowd before, but expected his dynamic presence to translate well.

I was wrong. He not only “translated well”, he absolutely rocked! There was presence, energy and vibrancy in the room. Both Shaune and the room full of marketers were in full force. The participation from the crowd was overwhelming.

As Alan motioned for Shaune to wrap things up, the crowd just about revolted. They yelled, “No! Keep him on!” They wanted as much info from Shaune as they could get. Alan was determined though. I took my position at the sales table. Before I knew it, there were people rushing the table…3-4 deep. Hands were thrust forward, waving credit cards. I couldn’t believe it!

People were writing their orders down on scraps of paper. Yes…bits and pieces of paper! Truly unbelievable. A very kind woman from the crowd offered to help us hand out the products. It was a zoo. There was no way we could have gotten through it without her.

This was a win-win situation. Shaune had something extremely valuable to offer. The crowd knew it, and didn’t hesitate to show their appreciation.

So even though I didn’t get to see many sights, I did obtain a great appreciation for the spirit and heart of the UK. Alan knows how to “do it right”!

Et tu, Terri?

You were holding out on me, girl! But since you didn’t get to see any sights, I forgive you.

Sure sounds like a ringer of a weekend, though, and I’m very glad to hear it. Kudos to Dave, too, (and his taximan) for saving the day.

So, Shaune, are you going to let us say we knew you when?

WOW Shaune!

When someone loves to do something as much as you love to speak in front of people…

You could be ON FIRE (literally) and still give an astounding presentation.

I would love to see it.

Hi Shaune,

First of all, I would like to tell you that I am so grateful to Alan Forrest Smith for finding you! I had no idea blokes like you existed.

I don’t know if you are a fan of The Secret (The secret.tv) but it has kept us sane while we do all the ground work and fight off opponents while Jane and I are ramping up to launch our new monthly membership club (dare I risk an exposure here - Yes Geoff - Oh OK) http://www.millionairesmentors.com - and one thing that was missing was my skill set in interviewing more guests on my site……

Then you popped out of the woodwork, and we could not believe what we heard. It was just - well the content was brilliant - but the timing was AWESOME (Sorry Yanks)

Would you believe that after getting your 6 Secrets book late on Saturday night, I interviewed Jerry Hart the next night, and have got a superb one hour 10 minute interview in the bag!

You’d better watch out, cos I’m now gunning for you to grab me a real positive interview on interviewing for my members.

Well Done Shaune - a brilliant presentation - no slides - all knowledge.

I gotta tell you…

I’m just getting to know Shaune Clarke, but brother, am I impressed with this guy! Make no mistake, he is the “real deal” and I feel compelled to share my insights regarding this gentleman.

Without go into the details, but suffice to say, I’ve most likely presented him with more challenges, doubts and concerns about making the leap in retaining him as a Coach as anyone to date.

Shaune always patiently listens to my concerns, and with excellent “posturing”, he’s taught me a great deal about selling – and we haven’t even begun the Coaching Program yet!

But that’s not the best part. Shaune is one of those rare individuals who truly “gets it”. His insights into copywriting are unique and powerful but he also has the gift of being able to pass on knowledge so it’s ingrained in you. You’ll derive much more than book-smarts; he teaches in a way that the material “becomes you”. It’s natural and flows without you even think about it. Shaune calls this becoming “fluid”.

And I’ve gleaned this from Shaune and still haven’t officially STARTED his program yet! But I’ve learned a wealth of knowledge from numerous communications with him.

(As a side note, Shaune took the time to call me from the UK to answer an emailed concern I sent him. I was blown away that he actually called me in Texas from overseas, but to later learn that he did so while under the gun, preparing for the seminar – I’m doubly honored and totally sold on this Shaune Clarke feller!)

For any of you doubters, wrestling with the decision whether to enroll in Shaune’s program — Have No Fear. You are about to make a major positive, life-changing, and rewarding career move that I firmly believe, will rock your copywriting world!

Suffice to say, I have found Shaune to be a man of great integrity and possess a true desire for you to succeed.

Shaune is “my” Coach!

P.S. If you’re still hesitant about investing in your future under Shaune’s tutelage, contact me – markpyrc@gmail.com

P.P.S. And no, Shaune didn’t ask me to brag him up but he did something for me today that clearly demonstrates the true man of character he is. And for that, thanks again Shaune!

I’ve learned so much in the past 2.5 weeks about this “Connection” and “resonance” with the audience, whether face to face, through print, or from the platform.

I’ve been taught in the old school sales techniques (which still work okay). But I have really bought in to creating that connection with the buyer, helping them realize their problem, and whowin them how to solve that problem is much better than shoving a solution down their throat.

I guess it comes back to “buying” vs. “being sold”, and ultimately how we really get the best results possible from our efforts.

That’s what its all about, right? We can talk about ‘feel good’ theories till the cows come home, but the reality is, we all want to find what works, to make the most amount of money…while providing value to our customers. (At least that’s why I’m in business)
