Let me tell you why I ask…
For weeks I’ve been looking for a copywriting apprentice. During this process I have realized that most trained copywriters are struggling to get $1000 - $2000 copywriting jobs. Some are even fighting for $500 jobs.
Well-trained, quality people, one after the other…not making money!
One applicant who applied to work with me was two years graduated from “The Masters Program” and was working for a big mailing house…working alright…an article job a month for a lousy $500…He was not making a living writing copy…not even close.
It’s on overused phrase in the copywriting world but I mean it… I was shocked at how common it is for copywriters to be struggling!
After all...
Yes, $4000.00 and a 12% royalty. Believe it or not, the client didn't even know what Direct Response Copy was when I first started talking to her. Less than 15 minutes later she wanted a "letter of understanding" drafted. She asked if she could put 50% down and make payments for the rest. “No problem,” I said.
My next client was a little more work but a very similar result…and now I command even higher fees. I just haven’t found it to be that difficult.
As surprised as I was by how lacking copywriting success was, I was excited to think I’d be able to train one or two of the applicants. I wanted to quickly teach them to write great copy.
My impression was...
I'd give everyone a few exercises to complete.
They'd quickly "get" what I was doing.
I'd pick one or two of the top applicants and...
We'd be off and running...
Although the applicants were all fully trained, they were missing critical factors in four important areas.
But most of all…
How do you feel about your copy?
There were pieces missing in each area for everyone who applied. It became clear that rectifying it was going to take a focused effort. I simply did not have the time it would require!
I really had given up on the idea of an apprentice to help me, when one applicant mentioned the idea of a coaching program.
He said he could see how different my writing was, how marketable it was, that he'd pay to have me teach him. He knew that he'd earn the money back quickly. Emphatically, he said…
Honestly I had no idea what to charge. To him, enrollment was essentially free.
Now that's the "Right Mindset"!
His conviction really got me thinking, and I had to agree. If you apply what I know it would be nearly impossible not to quickly stumble across two, "middle-of-the-road", copywriting jobs.
Long story short…

Having a talk show taught me how to uncover hidden emotions, how to get to peoples real passions. Real quick. This is such a great talent to have when it comes to writing copy. Interviewing clients and their customers uncovers incredible copy material. Material you just can’t get any other way.

Think of yourself as a product.
Please don’t fall into the trap of “offering copywriting services". If you do, you’re destined to be a brochure copywriter aching for "The Big Break" that never comes.
You must position yourself as having something nobody else has. Something that clearly shows clients your ability to improve their bottom line.
It’s exciting to see this evolve during the coaching program. Everyone gets excited when they realize their own unique positioning as a copywriter and who their target market is.

Let me explain…
There are basically three types of copy:
Editorial copy has its place but it’s not terribly profitable.
Both benefit-rich copy and hypey copy can be profitable but there are so many people offering it that it has become a commodity.
Something you can get anywhere, and something that someone will produce very inexpensively. You can end up competing with people who think nothing of charging a "workman's rate."
You didn't become a copywriter to struggle did you?
Prospects are numb to inflated promises and hype.
It doesn't seem believable.
They feel as though they are being sold… their resistance goes up.
We want to lower resistance... not increase it. Carefully and purposely weaving, elements, such as, Resonance, Connection and Empathy into your copy lowers resistance.
